Venice Travel Guide: San Marco, Rialto, and the Islands

Short answer: Venice is Italy's lagoon city; combining over-the-water architecture and island hopping through San Marco Square, the Rialto Bridge, the Doge's Palace, its canals, and the islands of Murano and Burano.

There are no cars; the vaporetto (water bus) plus walking is the main mode of transportation.

Build your trip around three pillars

Most travelers split their days between the San Marco core, the Rialto neighborhood, and an island day. Venice main page · What is Venice famous for?

San Marco and the Doge

St. Mark's Square, the Basilica, and the Campanile form the city's iconic square. Doge's Palace and the Bridge of Sighs are in the same block. The crowds in the Piazza peak during cruise ship hours.

Rialto, Accademia, Dorsoduro

The Rialto Bridge and its market serve as the commercial and culinary axis. The Accademia Gallery and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection make up the Dorsoduro art district. The Grand Canal is best experienced via vaporetto.

Quick decision: San Marco in the morning, back alleys in the afternoon; try to avoid Rialto during peak tourist hours.

Murano, Burano, Torcello

Murano for glass, Burano for its colorful houses, and Torcello for a quiet, historic island make up the classic trio. Allocate half a day to a full day.

The culinary scene

Cicchetti (bar snacks) and the bacaro culture are both practical and authentic. Restaurants right on the Piazza drive up prices; side streets tend to offer better value.

Sample itinerary framework

Day 1: San Marco + Doge's Palace + Campanile.

Day 2: Rialto + Dorsoduro / Accademia.

Day 3: Murano–Burano (and optionally Torcello).

Field note

During the acqua alta (high water) season, boots and elevated walkways are necessary. Dragging wheeled luggage over bridges can be exhausting.
