Prague Travel Guide: Bridge, Castle, and Old Town

Short answer: Prague is the capital of Czechia; combining Charles Bridge, Old Town Square and the Astronomical Clock, Prague Castle, Malá Strana, and the Vltava riverbank into a walkable city with a Gothic–Baroque silhouette.

The center is largely walkable, though the castle hill requires stairs or a tram.

Build your trip on three pillars

Most travelers split their days between the Old Town, the castle–Malá Strana area, and the river–views. Prague main page · What is Prague famous for?

Old Town and Charles Bridge

Old Town Square, the Astronomical Clock, Týn Church, and Charles Bridge form the backbone of the first day. Crossing the bridge at dawn or in the late afternoon softens the crowds. The Powder Tower and Municipal House serve as Art Nouveau complements.

Prague Castle and Malá Strana

Prague Castle, St. Vitus Cathedral, and Golden Lane make up the city's largest complex. The Baroque streets of Malá Strana and the John Lennon Wall are close by. Petřín Tower offers an alternative viewpoint.

Quick tip: Dedicate a separate day to the castle; do not cram it into the same fast-paced day as the Old Town.

Other stops

The Jewish Quarter (Josefov), Vyšehrad, the Dancing House, and a Vltava boat cruise expand the itinerary. Wenceslas Square serves as the shopping and modern center axis.

The dining scene

Czech beer and classic restaurants are heavily concentrated in the center; tourist menus drive up prices, so side streets can offer better value.

Sample itinerary framework

Day 1: Old Town + Astronomical Clock + Charles Bridge.

Day 2: Prague Castle + Malá Strana.

Day 3: Josefov or Vyšehrad + the riverfront.

Field note

Crowds peak at the bridge and on the hour by the clock. A mix of cash and card is still common in some places; check with smaller restaurants beforehand.
