Krakow Travel Guide: Rynek, Wawel, and Kazimierz

Short answer: Krakow is the historical and cultural heart of Poland, combining a medieval cityscape with historical memorial tours through Rynek Główny, Sukiennice, Wawel Castle, Kazimierz, the Vistula riverfront, and day trips to Wieliczka and Auschwitz.

The city center is very pedestrian-friendly; be sure to book day trips in advance.

Build your trip around three main pillars

Most travelers split their days between the Old Town–Wawel, Kazimierz, and day trips. Krakow main page · What is Krakow famous for?

Rynek and Wawel

Main Market Square (Rynek), Cloth Hall (Sukiennice), St. Mary's Basilica, and Town Hall Tower form the backbone of your first day. Wawel Castle and its Cathedral sitting atop the hill make up the complementary block. The Planty park ring provides a lovely green framework for walking.

Kazimierz

The Kazimierz Jewish quarter offers a distinct vibe—or a great way to spend an afternoon or evening—filled with synagogues, street art, and a buzzing dining and bar scene. Schindler's Factory museum is located nearby.

Quick tip: Spend your morning exploring Rynek and Wawel, reserve your evening for Kazimierz, and leave Auschwitz for a completely separate day.

Day Trips

Wieliczka Salt Mine offers an incredible underground cavern experience. Auschwitz-Birkenau is a profound memorial site; guided tours and early planning are a must.

Culinary highlights

Obwarzanek is a quick and handy snack right on the square. Pierogi and a Kazimierz zapiekanka are absolute classics.

Sample itinerary

Day 1: Rynek + Sukiennice + Wawel.

Day 2: Kazimierz (+ Schindler's Factory).

Day 3: Wieliczka or Auschwitz.

Field notes

Rynek gets lively and crowded in the evenings. Please observe respectful etiquette during your Auschwitz tour; this is not the place for a selfie-focused outing.
